This thread allows you the users to let me know what you want to see in future versions of the websites.

In this 1st post I'll maintain a list of what I'm working on and planning to work on.

Functionality in Testing

Allowing the website to be independent from Amazon.
Allowing the website owner to generate a sitemap.
Creating item listings on Google Product Base.

Future Functionality already on my list to do

History report of inventory files processed.
Report of pending inventory files and ability to process them immediately.

Ideas for Future Functionality

Wizard to help new users setup their website.
Set of default ‘look & feel’ templates to help new users.
Ability to apply color palettes globally across the website.

I would like the column entitled media added to our uploads. Currently, I upload a bunch of music items that are not listed anywhere else and they are just lumped together, even though I have the media column on my spreadsheet. For example, I have a music cassette listed but when you look at the listing, it does not say what kind of media it is, for all anyone knows it could be vinyl or and 8-track or a 45 etc.
Thanks.

First, I want to say I'm very happy with WOB.

Here are a couple of Wish List items, which I would appreciate. Maybe others would, too:

1. Make newest listings show up first on the page when customers browse my category pages. Currently, listings are in alphabetical order. Showing the newest ones first would make the WOB websites always look fresh.

2. Capture the Signed flag on The Art of Books so I wouldn't have to decide whether to create a browse path for Books:Signed or Books:[Category:Sub-Cat]. This would help customers find my signed books by genre and by "Signed."

3. Similar to #2 above, but not as easy, I'd love to be able to show off my Collectible listings separately. Currently, customers can only find them by browsing through the category listings. It would be great if all books with an AOB condition of Collectible could somehow be displayed on the site together.

Edited to correct an error.

Andy,

It seems to me that ALL of the features you listed in your post of 2/11/2010 have been accomplished. Congratulations.

Here are my suggestions, in order of priority and coincidentally, increasing difficulty to implement:

1) Periodic sitemap generation, say once a week. I don't want to have to remember to do this periodically.

2) I used the wizard to create a Recent Listing page, sorted by date added. It's at http://www.4shadowsbooks.com/Recent.aspx But, anytime I update prices, any listing with a trivial update ends up at the top of this page, often pushing actual new listings down. It would be nice for the site to differentiate between "actually new" and "just updated" listings.

3) Also regarding recent listings: Some kind of automatic rollover for recent listings. The last time I updated my Recent Listings page was 15 months ago: 8/20/2011.  In order to update it, I have to go to the admin page, change the heading at the top and manually update the wizard's date parameter. What I'm imagining is a wizard for a recent listings page that shows "actually new" listings created in the last, say, 30 days. I don't want to have to remember to do this periodically.

A few suggestions that have to do with allowing buyers to find other books of interest:

4) I agree with stlbooks about the ability to sort in a category list by something other than title. By author, by date added (see suggestion 2 above about "actually new" vs. "updated."

5) On a product detail page, a link to show other books by that author. (This idea is stolen from ChrisLands sites I have seen)

6) On the product detail page (whether you got there by a category browse or by a search), show the category or categories in which this book is found, and link to that category. I use the multiple category feature quite a bit. For example, a biography of Lucille Ball would be in categories for Biography and for Arts & Entertainment, while a biography of Patton might be in Biography and also in History: WW2. A historical mystery like an Ellis Peters novel might be in Mysteries and in Historical Fiction. Someone interested in Patton might be interested in other Biographies, but may also be interested in other books about WW2. Currently, if you browse my site by category and drill down, then where you're at is in the left column. But, if you get to a product detail page by a search, the category is unknown.

An observation related to suggestion 5: I tinkered with the "Current Category" wizard list that I saw someone else using. Again, if the shopper browses by category, this works. But, if a book is found by a search, the system appears to have no knowledge of category and lists x number of totally random books.

7) (I don't imagine this would be easy) Embed photos on the product detail page rather than on a separate page. In my wildest fantasy, I imagine thumbnails with a small pop-up zoom window, kind of like on ABE. Why? According to my google webmaster tools and statcounter, because of my efforts to capture high quality photos of books, I get some number of google image search hits for certain books. For example, The Princess Bride 25th Anniversary Edition, currently viewable at http://www.4shadowsbooks.com/b8s5-120709-h01/Review.aspx. But, the image hits I get are to http://www.4shadowsbooks.com/BookImages/b8s5-120709-h01.jpg with no link to the page for folks to buy!

For an example of how numbers 5, 6, and 7 would work, see http://www.bluebirdbooks.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=22631. (Assuming my friend Eric at bluebird doesn't sell this book quickly). This is a book by James Agee that is listeded in 5 (!) categories. If this product detail page were found by an image search, a category browse, a site search, or whatever, everything is on this page to find similar books that may be of interest to the shopper - whether their interest is in James Agee, Pulitzer Prize winners, New Arrivals to bluebird books, or Fine Bindings.

Thanks for your consideration of these enhancements.
